Some time ago when I was craving for Thai food in Kansai, my husband and I stumbled upon a cozy neighborhood spot. We loved their lunch set, especially the vibrant Asian greens beautifully arranged around the main dish. Not only were they visually striking, their crisp texture and aromatic flavors also made it hard for us to stop eating them. How was it possible that these vegetables were so different from those sold in regular stores? This piqued my curiosity. As I wondered where these delicious greens came from, a friend gave me the answer: Kawabe Farm in Fukuoka, Kyushu.
It was my dear friend Hiro who introduced me to this hidden gem. “I’ve found the best Asian vegetables!” he said. “They’re even exported to high-end supermarkets in Hong Kong. I bet you enjoyed these during your time there!” This connection instantly led me to the amazing Kawabe Farm.

A Journey Across Cultures
Ippei-san lived abroad for nearly 15 years, including in New York, Fujian province in China, and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. His experiences with the rich culinary traditions of Asia sparked his deep passion for food. In 2006, he returned to Japan to establish Kawabe Farm, specializing in cultivating and selling unique Asian vegetables and herbs.
Kawabe Farm is strategically located on the fertile lands of Fukuoka’s Chikugo region and is surrounded by lush fields and nourished by the tranquil waters of the Chikugo River. This ideal environment allows them to grow a wide variety of seasonal vegetables and herbs with minimal use of pesticide, ensuring safety and quality.
From Fukuoka to the World
Ippei-san hopes to introduce the beauty of Asian food culture to Japan and to help Asian expatriates rediscover the flavors of home. Together with his wife, Kumi-san who has experience working with Thai state agencies, the couple also shares the best ways to enjoy their well-loved greens through events and cooking classes. Today, their produce is not only loved locally by top hotels and restaurants but is also shipped to the fine supermarkets of Hong Kong.
