Collection: Nouvelle SHOJIN by Kunie Hasutani
“Embrace the moment with an open mind.”
Many of us, myself included, start by choosing a recipe before preparing the ingredients for a dish. Kunie Hasutani, an expert in shōjin ryōri, adopts a different approach instead. What is shōjin ryōri? It is often translated as traditional Buddhist cuisine in Japan, one that embodies an earnest commitment to a cuisine which excludes meat, fish, or other animal products.
This cuisine can be enjoyed by anyone, including vegetarians and vegans. It reflects a profound respect for life and nature, and a strong devotion to vegetarian food.
About Kunie Hasutani
As the wife of a monk from Kohoku in Shiga Prefecture, Kunie-san has been deeply passionate about shōjin ryōri. With the knowledge and techniques passed down through 28 generations from a temple north of Lake Biwa, she developed a modern take on shōjin ryōri while preserving its traditional essence.
In collaboration with Hata's Hamper
Kunie-san believes that by attuning to the “voices” of the vegetables, and being mindful of their characteristics, each dish can be unique. This distinctive approach captured the attention of Hata’s Hamper and sparked off an exciting collaboration. Kunie-san’s wholesome shōjin vegetarian curry, infused with her boundless passion, is now available for purchase on Hata’s Hamper’s website. In addition, shōjin cooking demonstrations have also been conducted in English.
