2 Easy Organic Cherry Tomato Recipes: All-Purpose Sauce & Oven-Dried Tomato Candy

What Makes Sakamoto Farm's Organic Cherry Tomatoes So Sweet?

Keiko, a huge fan of Sakamoto Farm's cherry tomatoes, visits Furano again and again. The other day, we harvested together in the field, and I’d love to share our two favorite preservation recipes that have become staples in my home.

Sakamoto Farm's cherry tomatoes are organically grown, basking in Furano's strong sun and large temperature differences between day and night. The skin pops with a crisp snap, and as you bite, rich umami and sweetness burst out. Because they are so flavorful with firm flesh, they don't get watery when cooked, making them perfect for preserving.

Our Family's Favorites! 2 Popular Preservation Recipes for Organic Cherry Tomatoes

[1. The Magical, All-Purpose Tomato Sauce]
This is the most searched and most popular way to preserve cherry tomatoes — and the simplest.

Ingredients: Organic cherry tomatoes / a pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Peel the cherry tomatoes by blanching them (dip in boiling water for 10 seconds, then into cold water).
  2. Return them to a pot, add a pinch of salt, and crush gently with a spatula while simmering on low heat for 10 minutes. That's it.

You'll be surprised how sweet it is, even without any sugar. Freeze it and it will transform into pasta sauce, homemade dressing, or soup base. Please season it later, according to how you use it.

[2. Sweet & Chewy Cherry Tomato Candy]
A staple in our house, perfect as a snack or appetizer.

Instructions:

  1. Remove the stems and poke one small hole in each tomato with a toothpick.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, arrange the tomatoes, and bake at 130°C (265°F) for 90 minutes. It's done when they become chewy like gummy candy.
  3. Store in a clean jar. Eat them like candy, as they are.

Popular variation: Marinated in Olive Oil
Place some of the tomato candies in a clean jar and cover with olive oil. It becomes like a Western-style pickle. Season with salt and pepper when you eat it, and simply top it on pizza or bread for a delicious treat. If you want something more refreshing like a Japanese asazuke (light pickle), try marinating them in white dashi instead of olive oil.

Enjoy Organic Cherry Tomatoes for Longer

These two recipes are like Furano's short summer, condensed into a jar. First, please enjoy the intense sweetness of the fresh tomatoes as they are, and then enjoy them for longer with these preservation recipes.

Limited quantity, only available in season.
