How Do You Read “Tekka Meron”? The Secret Behind Sweet Furano Melons
What Does “Tekka Meron” Mean? Why Furano Melons Are So Sweet
“Tekka meron” is read te ki ka me ron in Japanese.
Tekka means fruit thinning. It is the farm practice of removing excess fruit early in the season. One Furano melon vine sets more than 40 baby melons, but farmers keep only 4 or 5 with perfect shape and sun. The rest are picked at tennis ball size.
I was shocked when I worked on a Furano melon farm in Hokkaido. If all 40 melons grow, nutrients spread too thin and none get sweet. So farmers pour every drop of the vine’s energy into the elite melons that survive a 40 to 1 competition.
Too Good to Waste: What Does a Tekka Melon Taste Like?
Thinned melons, or tekka melons, rarely reach stores. They are deep green with fine fuzz. Inside, the flesh is white and seeds are immature.
Flavor is closer to white gourd or cucumber than melon. Think light bitterness and a crisp bite. Sugar is only 2 to 3 Brix, but that refreshing crunch is perfect for summer farm work. Locals call it mottainai, too good to waste, and eat them as a palate cleanser.
