What Is Furano Melon? Premium Red Flesh Melon from Hokkaido, Japan | Farm Direct Gift
Furano Melon is a generic term for exceptionally sweet, high-quality melons grown in the Furano region of Hokkaido, Japan.
Within Furano, the Yamabe district is renowned for advanced research into melon cultivation methods. Farmers in this area have mastered growing intensely sweet melons by leveraging the region’s fertile volcanic soil and extreme day-night temperature swings.
Nakayama Farm, located in the Yamabe district at the foot of Mt. Furanodake, tests new melon varieties every year. Only the best cultivars for the season and local climate are selected and shipped to ensure peak flavor and sweetness.
*Harvest dates vary slightly by year and weather
- Early July – Mid July: King Ruby – Red flesh melon known for its rich sweetness and deep aroma
- Late July – Early August: Orfe – Green/blue flesh melon with a refreshing, elegant sweetness
- Late July – Late September: Tiara R113U – Rare red flesh variety available into late summer
Furano Melons are graded into three classes — Excellent, Superior, and Good — based on overall evaluation of Brix/sugar content, netting pattern, and shape. Nakayama Farm ships only “Superior” grade or higher, meeting strict quality standards.
We ship the freshest, sweetest melons in season from Nakayama Farm at the time of your order, direct from Hokkaido.

Sent multiple orders to our aunt in Japan, and she loves the melons. She says they are the best she has ever had. Also, everything on Hata's Hamper is incredible, and the customer service is unbelievably great. Don't hesitate to get something from Hata's Hamper!
Thank you so much for your melon order, and for the lovely review!
We’re truly happy to hear that you enjoyed it.Melons from Nakayama Farm in Furano are known for their rich sweetness with a clean finish, and their incredible juiciness—each bite overflows with fresh flavor. We’re proud to share them with you again this year, with full confidence in their quality.
I honestly think this is the sweetest melon I have had. The taste of the Furano melons is unmatchable. Cantaloupes are not a typical purchase at my house since none of us enjoy the flavor but we couldn't have enough of this melon. So sweet!
Thank you for your purchase of Nakayama melons. We are glad you found them sweet and juicy.
We have eaten many kinds of Furano melons, and we think Nakayama melons are the best in Furano, and we sell them at Hata's Hamper. Please look forward to next year.
I ordered the Furano melon for the first time.
There’s a note that tells you when is the best to eat from the day of harvest. Date of harvest was written, of course. And it tells you that 10 days from the harvest is the best to eat. Also can wait 12 days if you like very ripe. I waited 12 days.
It was sooooo DELICIOUS! SWEET! PERFECT TEXTURE!
Thank you for your order. I can confidently recommend these melons because I have actually worked on this farm and I am convinced that without such careful and meticulous care in growing them, the melons would not have the taste of Nakayama melons. Not all Furano melons are as good as our Furano melons, but we supply them to you because they are Nakayama melons.
We like to leave them a little longer than suggested to fully ripen and capture the full flavours. Refrigerate before eating and you’ve got the perfect summer snack. We also sent as a gift and everybody loved them.
